Why Do You Hold Citigroup (C)? More Than Just A Dividend?

    Reply Quote
Citigroup (C) is a top 10 holding in Zeccoshare,  yet there is very limited discussion about it here.   Even with all of the negative news recently!

So, if you hold Citi, why?

    - Is it for the dividend?
    - Because it's a value stock?
    - Because it's a blue-chip stock?
    - Because it's a solid financial stock?

    * Cause I'm stupid.
    * Cause I thought it was a value stock, but that was when it was 25% higher.
    * Cause they've got >$1 trillion in assets so I'm told.

I'm still holding, this would be the worse time to sell.

I purchased at $33.20 and am holding not only for the nice dividend,( which I think is safe) but also for growth.  Check back in a few years.

Because I just opened this account my C holdings are in my other brokerage account.

Yeah, that pretty much says it all. Because of all their debt, they're a very poor offering.

The only instance I'd have anything to do with C is to buy puts on it and walk it all the way down to the bottom.

If I held it right now, I'd keep buying every three months for two years until it bottoms.

But I wouldn't. Because I believe it' gown down. So I'd buy puts on it, but I'd go for MO before C in a heartbeat. People buy smokes and drinks long after they've stopped paying their mortgages.

    C looks cheap trading @ $30 +/-.
    I may take a nibble.

Good choice of words... looks like a nice time to just take a "nibble"

To answer the orginal question, if I did own C I would own it mainly for the dividend....

I bought a while back in a different brokerage account that i haven't transfered here (BoA, incidentally, due to their 30 free trade/month offer). I bought the day they announced they were going to get rid of 400 bn in assets thinking that in addition to getting rid of bad assets, they may also be thinking about spinning off some units. Too soon to tell if i came in at the right time (right now, obviously not). They paid their last divi (recently cut), but there's a lot of murmurs out there that they're going to be cutting it again, and with another writedown of xxx bn's around the corner, i'm not expecting the divi to be too safe.

Yeah, me too!  My position on C is currently in negative 60% and I'm still holding it.

Remember what happened following Mar.17th?   I love downs: they produce buying opportunities.  You might want to look at price as discussed in the Bottom Fishing Group, What a Bottom Looks Like.
