    What does VOLUME mean?

    I see listed on all the reporting sites the VOLUME of shares traded under any symbol, but I never see how many were bought, and how many were sold on that day's trading.

    I suppose that if 1 Million shares were traded, that could be a million bought, a million sold, or a combination of buys and sells which totals a million shares traded.

    Can someone please explain this to me?

    Hi bottom_dollar,

    Volume=the amount of shares from sellers to buyers in a given period of time. If a buyer of a stock purchases 100 shares from a seller, then the volume for that period increases by 100 shares based on that transaction.

    Bottom, a trade always consist of a buy AND a sell. When you sell, the shares your selling always get bought immediately by another investor.

    So one million is one million buys and one million sells, for instance. If it was only one million sells, those million shares would drop into oblivion and be lost forever... <cue Twilight Zone theme>
