Tax Rebates - What to do with them?

    Reply Quote

As the tax rebate checks are going to be showing up in mail boxes in the next few weeks, what, or how do you plan to use them.  Do you think the governments stimulus plan will work? Who will benefit from it?  Personally I think that it will have an impact in a few sectors.  I think Walmart, Costco, maybe Bestbuy and circuit city, but I think the impact of the last two would be more felt by their suppliers.

Of the people I have talked to in person, none of them need the 600 bucks, Including myself. A few of my friends preemptivly spent the checks, buying new laptops from best buy last week.  I thought about it, they had some pretty sweet sales, but instead I think I am going to use the money to invest in the companies that I think will benefit from the increased spending at their stores.

I am thinking about picking up some positions in Walmart and/or Costco.  I may add to my position in Urban outfitters.  I think that both will appeal to a group of the population that will spend their money. Walmart, people who are having a hard time with the economy right now, and will likely spend the checks at Walmart, Costco or other discount retailers (biglots maybe?) I think URBN will benefit from the younger population.  Maybe high school kids who made enough money to get the rebate, but are mostly dependant on their parents for support.  To them, its free money.  And I know when I was in high school I didn't care about saving money.

Also, Maybe the restaurant and gaming sector.  For the people who are still afloat, but trying to cut back on going out just because times are tougher.  I think they may kick back, go out and have a good time with some of their rebate money.

Lastly, surveys say that 80% of people are not going to even spend the checks, rather put them in savings, or pay down debt.  So.. Will banks benefit from this as well?

How are you going to play the Rebates?

Hello I read this ad the other day.

As you may have heard the Bush Administration said each and every one of us would now get a nice rebate.

If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China.

If we spend it on gasoline it will all go to the Arabs.

If we spend it on fruit and vegetables, it will all go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala.

If we buy a good car, it will all go to Japan.

If we buy useless crap it will all go to Taiwan and none of it will help the American economy.

We need to keep that money here in America , so the only way to keep that money here at home is to buy prostitutes and beer, since those are the only businesses still made in the US.

Haha, how about 1 share of Google?    If we invest the money, then it stays our money, right? =)

IM not saying this is a good plan, but the fact of the matter it. Its a done deal. The checks are on their way.  If we invest them, and invest in the US it isnt going to China on out behalf.  We may even be able to gain something on the deal.  Assuming others do spend the checks.  So what are you going to do with them?
