    Solar is Hot! - Again

    One of the star stocks of 2007 was solar company FSLR. This year, it tanked significantly more than other tech companies, from almost 280 down to 165.

    But recently it has accelerated again and with today's 10% jump it is now at an all time high. Aren't these swings a bit extreme, even for a growth stock?

    It's been a good rebound for all solar stocks.  FSLR, JASO, SOLF, SPWR...and the polysillicon stocks like WFR.

    I sold SOLF today.  I expect it to continue up but with its volatility I decided to take profits and wait and see.  If I get a chance to get more, so be it. 

    I think Cramer pumped FSLR yesterday so I'm not touching that one for a while.  Sector is indeed hot though.

     

    Interestingly, HAL also hit a 52 week high (or came damned close) today.

    Solar is very volatile. I've been in and out and back in a number of solar stocks. I would say buy solar on dips; try to make it a value play.

    I think we're at a place with solar stocks, like we were with tech stocks almost ten years ago. There are new companies going public, competing with each other. There's going to be mergers and bankrupcies and it's hard to predict which companies will rise to the top. A green mutual fund or ETF may be a good way to play the field. I own some Winslow Green Solution Fund.

    I find solar too hard to play with. I see extremes both ways with solar.
