Here's a great article on some relatively cheap (valuation) solar stocks from seeking alpha: http://www.seekingalpha.com/article/51337-three-cheap-clean-energy-stocks

I've been slowly accumulating a position in CSIQ.  It has the cheapest valuation in the industry and is expected to grow over 300% in 08.  It is currently not profitable yet, but is expected to hit profitability next quarter (they report this quarter on Nov. 14).  The stock just came off a pop up to 11 and this looks like a pretty attractive buying point.

I'm also considering a small position in LDK as well, but don't want to be over exposed in one sector.

I like the POWERSHARES WILDERHILL CLEAN ENERGY PORTFOLIO (PWB) exchange traded fund better than individual stocks.  The individual stocks I pick tend to be from companies that go out of business. Compare XLE to PBW and you will see that alternative energy is beginning to gain faster than old energy.

    Good luck!

I suggest a rather longer hold. Here's my plan.

Since I don't have big bucks coming out of the chute, I am accumulating both ETFs and individual stocks in alternative energy.

My original idea was that any Dem candidate could be counted on to cut fossil fuel subsidies and move to alternatives. However, after seeing the debates I think it probable that even a Repug will propose incentives for alternative energy (although without removing big oil's welfare).

I am buying regularly and intend to keep buying right through the bear market. I want to have monster positions when the spike comes.

I expect the spike to come during the first Congress after the 2008 elections. This does not mean that every alternative energy stock is gold, since policy does not trump economics.

I concur with the opinions above that ethanol as currently brewed is useless. If that switchgrass research works out, the first company to market with that will hit a homer, though. Also, biodiesel can't be ignored because of the trucking and construction industries. But corn to ethanol is a loser.

Guess Alternative energy will be good to invest in. Taking the case of FSLR, though it is in turbulent times like the rest of the stocks, it did make a mark on Friday 18.1.08 and I am watching out for the same.http://www.marketsimplified.com/

I've been wondering how to get into massive solar arrays that power cities rather than little boards that power homes.

The monster array being built in Cal is a closed venture capitalist deal, but the partners are PCG and FPL.

The massive arrays are the future of solar, not the dinky chips--although I'm buying into both, as well as wind and tidal.

Photovoltaics are not the only kind of solar power.  Thermal solar
power is more efficient, and much simpler.  There are challenges, of
    course; read more at www.ausra.com.

I don't know enough to recommend a company, but it's another avenue to
explore if you're interested in solar.

ZAAP is starting another upswing. This occurred just after they announced that they have found the right wheel motor technology to use in their vehicles. They estimate having the wheel motor in production vehicles starting this year(2009). The plant they are building in Kentucky will primarily deal with the vehicles with wheel hub motors. Let's hope they beat some of the large manufacturers to the practical electric car.

Two sites that I use for research are

    http://greenstockscentral.com
    http://www.ecostocks.com/ecostocks/

I like to do preliminary research from these sites and use my normal research outlets to make my final decisions. But I like how both of these websites have 'at a glance' look at 'green' stocks including solar.
