SOLF looks to be alright and AKNS looks fantastic, both are well above the SMA's. I think ASTI will continue to fall back to its pre-December levels.

I'm just wowing @ akns. I can't believe this is the first time I'm hearing about it. I know solar is hot but can it be this good and for how long will it last? Question - is it too late to buy in now to fslr or akns ?

Can I ask what may be a dumb question? Perhaps I just don't "get it", but aren't solar panels ultimately commodity products?

I have a vague understanding that there are capacity issues in the industry, meaning that these companies are selling more than they can currently produce. In every commodity business, the key competitive differential is being the low cost producer. So every company must rush to bring additional capacity on line to capture these scale economies. What does this industry look like then (e.g. what is to stop cut throat margin pressure when each company is seeking market share at any cost)?

I hate giving front running tips to my own trades, but if I were looking at this industry, I'd try to play the "pickaxe sellers" rather than the "gold miners".

Keep an eye on LDK...much cheaper than the rest and them and the multiple should come back now that the inventory issues are behind them.

Alright, solar companies. This is my mini evaluation process:

    - If the solar company is serving the US market and making it's profits in US dollars...I'd re-think that one. Suntech Power Co., Ltd (NYSE:STP, ADR) serves the Chinese market and makes their profits in Reminbi (up 7% against the USD, so far).

    - Geography also places a key factor because you need to look at the regulations surrounding the solar industry. Is the US promoting solar technology? Sure, most American's will say "yes" without thinking, but seriously--in comparison to the initiatives currently in place in the rest of the world, the U.S. isn't looking so hot. Also consider, 2/3's of China's land area recieves more than 2000 hours of sunlight--more than any other region in the world at a similar latitude/longitude (yes, more than Japan/Europe, etc) it sort of made sense for them to create loads of solar initiatives, attracting all kinds of foreign investment---something of which Suntech will be directly benefiting from...

    - Solar power appliances are also rather commonplace there, seeing as there's massive demand for electricity (the Chinese use more solar energy per capita than anywhere else in the world)..fun fact: over 3000 manufacture solar powered water heaters...

    - In addition, I like to take a peak at who their partners and subsidiaries are, and what kind of photovaltaic supply contracts they have--STP has a 66% stake in another company called MSK Corporation (largest BIPV (building integrated photovoltaic) supplier in the world.

But anyway, bottom-line, in terms of solar-look at the balance sheets, look where revenues are being produced, and how long their contracts are...I just said Suntech for the stake of stability, they are the leading manufacture of PV cells, they have killer conversion efficiency, and solid financials that are further backed up with long term contracts from all over the globe....will it be up or down if 5 days? couldn't tell you. But look at the numbers for 5 seconds and you might begin to see the signs of something more long term...

    SolarFun Power Holdings
Jiangsu Sunshine Company -- i think is only A-share though
Trina Solar - design the overall system, make wafers, and invested heavily in RD

...start looking at wind while you're at it.

I think solar is where its at.  Solar along with wind and geothermal are the best technologies for renewable energy solutions that have the least environmental impact, and the most upside.   I have several solar/wind plays in my portfolio.  I like FPL because they mix traditional energy with solar, wind, and nuclear, plus it actually makes money and pays a decent dividend.  I also own CY cause they own 50% of Sunpower (SPWR) and make other electronic devices (USB, memory, clocks) and also make an actual profit.  I also like YGE, they have various contracts in the US and Europe, I like the upside potential and they make money.  I also like GE because they make components for wind turbines, also sell solar panels and CFL bulbs and such.  I was invested in WFR for a while.  I am interested in Evergreen Solar, with its promising String Ribbon technology.  AMAT also might be a good play, I have heard they really have invested heavily recently in the technology and have been scoring contracts.
