    Hello everyone, i'm a new member, not familiar with the stock market, any help on how i start buying stocks.

    Learn about dollar-cost averaging.

    I'd look at www.morningstar.com to check what companies certain exchange traded funds own and www.mfea.com to learn about mutual funds. Mutual funds and ETFs are nearly the same ball of wax, but ETFs tend to trade their portfolio less and thus tend to have lower expenses (but not always).

    If you have money you're just dying to lose in hopes of making a lot of money and think you can beat between 76% and 90% of investors out there, I'd take a look at individual securities of high-quality companies. I wouldn't buy penny stocks, since they have few regulatory requirements. I want to be able to read the 10Q and 10K of a company, check their financials, and listen to the conference calls to see if management is responsible. A speculative stock is usually a nano-cap, micro-cap, or even some small-caps that have prospects for making money, but that could also go bankrupt. You should not have any more than 10-15% of your portfolio in speculative stocks even when you're in your 20's. Even though this portfolio may be 10-20% of your entire portfolio, you still want to be diversified.

    When you see comments on options, don't even touch them. They're really for people who know what they're doing, have lost money in them (on paper that is), and know the limitations of their use. I've only bought options one time and I might consider buying 1 contract for a total cost of $30.00. I made about $20 in the option, but that wasn't until I had a $35 unrealized loss and then a $55 gain. For instance, a person may speculate that a company will be taken over so they buy a call option so they don't have the downside risk of the stock tanking if the deal fails. The downside risk is the premium they pay for the call (which can be mightly expensive). Another reason is because a person owns 200 shares of an ETF but they believe the market will go down so instead of selling the ETF, they buy 2 put option contracts to hedge the downfall and should be protected.
