    MO-PMI distribution based on trade date or settlement date?

    today MO distributed shares of PMI to Altria’s shareholders of record as of 5:00 p.m. New York City Time on March 19, 2008.

    Does this mean that if a trade executed prior to this date/time then it would be eligable for the distribution, or would the settlement date have to be prior to this date/time?

    I have spent a lot of time researching this question myself. Altria's website is not very helpful. You can buy the stock anytime up until the distribution date and still receive the PMI shares. Basically, Altria will give the shares to the shareholder of record on march 19, but that person surrendered the right to the PMI shares to you when you bought it. Therefore, you will receive the PMI shares from the person you bought the shares from.
