    If my margin account is lower than $2000, what will happen then?

    Suppose I have opened a margin account.

    I used it for 3 months. Then I took most money out and there is only $1000 left in my margin account.

    $1000 is lower than the $2000 requirement for a margin acount. So will I get punished with some money or receive a margin call? Or my margin account will be switched back to a cash account without any fee?

    If your account balance is less than $2,000, you're account will stay a margin account, but you will not be able to use any margin.  Under your profile it should still say "Individual Margin" under account type.  However if you attempt to use marin it will create a margin call even though you have a margin account.  I'm just starting to figure out how margin accounts and shorting stocks work myself.  But based on an experience I had a few weeks ago, it will create a margin call.  When the Visa IPO came out, it was supposed to open at $44.00.  I decided to buy about 12 shares which is all the money I had left in my account and I thought I would still have roughly $80 left.  Instead, it opened up much higher and the purchase went through almost $5 higher and I had a margin call of almost $150.  I called Zecco and they worked with me on it and understood I was new at trading and allowed me to sell another stock to cover the margin call (which normally is not allowed).  This earned huge customer service satisfaction points with me on Zecco.  I know this post is over a month old but I didnt see another reply.  Hope this helps and someone please correct me if I'm wrong as I am a newbie at trading stocks :-)
