INTC has a lot of new chips and USB-3 motherboard coming too.   Since AMD is too deeply in debts, they will have a tough time to survive this depression, recession, or whatever.;)

It looks like AMD might be making some cash soon, but it's certain their stock will go up before their cashflow. If you missed the sub-5 dollar window... well, I don't know, you should always have your own buy and sell prices in mind when you jump into a stock. Take care!

AMD To Sell Digital-TV Ops To Broadcom For $192.8M
    Last update: 8/25/2008 6:57:49 AM

       DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) has agreed to sell its digital-television business to Broadcom Corp. (BRCM) for $192.8 million as the struggling chip maker moves to streamline itself as it battle chip giant Intel Corp. (INTC).
The deal, set to close by year's end, will make AMD "leaner and more focused while seeking to create a business model to deliver sustainable profitability," said President and Chief Executive Dirk Meyer. He added the sale will bolster AMD's balance sheet and lower the amount of revenue the company needs to generate to break even.
Broadcom said adding AMD's digital-TV efforts with its own will allow the communication-chip maker to offer a complete line of products that covers the entire segment, from low to high end. The company has seen digital TV as a key growth area.
Some 530 AMD employees will join Broadcom through the deal.
Meyer became CEO of AMD last week with a formidable challenge of returning the company to profitability after seven consecutive quarterly losses and transforming the way computers process graphics and information.
The company's cost structure has been among the biggest worries for investors, causing AMD to burn through its cash. Reserves as of June 30 were down nearly 10% during the second quarter and dropped 17% in the first half of the year.
AMD's stock hit a six-year low last month and is down 52% the past year. It closed Friday at $5.81 and there was no premarket trading for AMD or Broadcom, which finished at $27.42.

AMD has room to grow but not much... Their products are always lagging behind Intel and Nvidia. Hitting 7 to 8 bucks is not unrealistic but the question is would you be able to make more money buying NVDA if you like this segment of the hitech industry.

You could have seen the selling slow down when it reached 4, bought at 4ish and change, and gotten out on the huge bounce it got.

But since you can't go back in time....

Also, that's exactly the reason why I got NVIDIA.
It doesn't really matter if AMD gains market share right now. That doesn't make them profitable overnight. The 4750 x2 is better than the 280 in benchmarks so far, sure. And you can argue that the consumer segment who actually buys 600+ dollar cards right when they come out aren't being impacted as hard by this economy, sure. But that still won't buy them a more efficient means of retaining all the money they poured into getting the thing out the door.

As much as I have always and will always root for the underdog, and have enjoyed and used AMD products, their processor lineup and the current price situation (mid-range processors are all under 100 dollars... ok... profits anyone? Don't think so. Their most expensive offering doesn't even break 400, unlike Intel, with their stupid 1500 dollar processors, haha.) The situation would have to change dramatically, and fast, for me to get in on this stock for any reason other than extremely short-term holding periods and the bumpy rides and are entailed.

Oh, and people have been pessemistic about this company before (it pretty much cycles from a penny stock to a 235983459 dollar winner every few years), but never has it done so bad on the fundamentals for so long.

    Wait.
    Jim Cramer said what?
Certainly it could go up to 8. But then AMD would have to give some pretty unexpected news... or you're going to have to find a LOT of really hopeful buyers to pump it up to those prices without anything killer down the pipeline.

PS I don't own any of these stocks, and I've been a diehard AMD fan for about 7 years, since I got into computers. And I can't really invision a future where there would be an Intel and NVDA, but no ATI and AMD. That's why my gut instict was to go against logic and buy at 4.25.
    Oh wait.
    3dfx anyone?

    ========================================================

People said the same thing in 2002 when AMD hit 3 dollars which is bottomed then the stock bounced back to 30-40 level after they gaining market shares for few years with new chips and only these 2 years AMD is losing market shares are losing shares to INTC. Since they have new chips, and new management, I believe that the stock will soar back to 20s..  I firmly believe that history will repeat again.

Amd is a sound swing/day trade but is prone to volatile days.  It's a crack junky stock, but I always keep it on my radar.

I would have bought AMD at 4.35, or BAC at 18.75, but for some awful reason my money got tied up for quite some time and pretty much made me explode in rage when those stocks exploded.
