America industrial might is like a wet noodle, it flays all over the place. No focus, no drive and sometime it take government to start an infusion. To me that what Obama new fuel efficiencies is an infusion of get off you soft ass and build a better widget (car). And if you company is weak, down the hatch sometime something great is built out of the ashes. American history has shown this time again.

The American industry is driven by market demand. Americans still want big vehicles. True, Americans are becoming more conscious of fuel economy as gasoline prices increase. However government mandates give us things like the 6 liter toilet that doesn't clean itself with one flush.

I agree that market demand is not there yet, but higher fuel
prices will get it there. We should phase in a gas tax of at
least $1/gallon to spur that demand. We need the tax revenue.

Wouldn't an increase in fuel tax set off another round of inflation, business bankruptcies and lay offs? Why do we need more tax revenue? More social programs, bail outs, pork, government?
